Review: Southwest Airlines Credit Cards

swSouthwest Airlines offers 3 different credit cards that offer Rapid Rewards points — two consumer credit cards and one small business credit card.

A short profile / review of each card is below. Click on any link to access the online application for that card.

Consumer Credit Cards:

  • Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Plus Card – The basic Southwest Airlines credit card offers two points per dollar on Southwest card purchases and on purchases at Rapid Rewards travel partners such as certain hotels and car rental agencies. You’ll earn 1 point per dollar on everything else, plus get 40,000 bonus points if you spend $1000 with the card in the first 3 months. You also get 3,000 points each year on your card anniversary. Annual fee is $69.
  • The Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Premier Card – A slight step up from the Plus card, giving you everything described above, except you’ll get 6,000 bonus points on each card anniversary instead of 3000, and you have the ability to earn 1500 “tier qualifying points” in Southwest’s A-List status program for every $10,000 in card purchases (up to a 15,000-point maximum per year). Also has no foreign transaction fees when you use it outside the United States. (The Plus card described above charges a 3% fee on such charges.) Annual fee is $99.

  • Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Premier Business Credit Card – Essentially the same as the consumer Premier card described above, except you have the opportunity to earn a 60,000-point bonus as a new cardholder, provided you make at least $3000 in purchases with the card in the first three months of having it. $99 annual fee.
