Sunoco gas stations, in partnership with Citibank, offers a credit card that gives you 5 cents off per gallon of gas charged to the card. Hard to argue with that, right? Well, there are a couple of other things to consider. Check out our complete overview / review of the Sunoco credit card below:
So, as we already mentioned, if you use the Sunoco credit card to purchase your Sunoco gas, you’re going to get 5 cents off each gallon of gas you buy. A no-brainer.
But you should also consider these points:
- The Sunoco credit card has an interest rate of 25.24%! So, if you get this card to save on your Sunoco gas, you’d better pay the card off completely every month! Otherwise you are going to pay way more in interest than you save at 5 cents per gallon.
- The Sunoco credit card can only be used at Sunoco, nowhere else. Opening up a new credit line for a card with such limited acceptance isn’t necessarily a great idea, especially if you have a shaky credit history.
- According to the AAA, the average price of a gallon of gas in March 2016 was $1.94 per gallon. If we use that number as the standard, a 5-cent discount is equal to about 2.58% off the price of each gallon. That’s a great discount! However, there are other credit cards on the market that offer 2% or 3% cash back on your gas purchases at ANY gas station, regardless of the per-gallon price. As the price of gas goes up, your Sunoco reward of 5 cents per gallon stays the same, meaning that once the price of a gallon goes over $2.50, you’re getting less than a 2% discount.
