Review: Starwood Hotels Credit Cards

Starwood Hotels & Resorts, in partnership with American Express, offers a consumer credit card and a business card that allow you to earn points in the Starwood Preferred Guest program. Our overview / review of these cards is below:

The Starwood Preferred Guest American Express Card for consumers can be used wherever American Express is accepted. It allows you to earn points in addition to those you would normally earn through the Starwood Preferred Guest program:

  • 2 Starpoints for every dollar charged to the card at Starwood & Marriott hotels.
  • 1 Starpoint per dollar on all other purchases.

You can also earn a bonus of 30,000 Starpoints if you use the card for at least $3000 in purchases within 3 months of getting the card.

Your Starpoints can be used for free stays at Starwood hotels, and you also have the advantage of Starpoints being transferable to many of the major airline frequent flyer programs on a 1-to-1 basis (1 Starpoint = 1 mile on most airlines), including American Airlines, Delta, and United (2 Starpoints = 1 mile on United). You can also transfer points to the Marriott Rewards program.

The Starwood credit card has an annual fee of $95, but this fee is waived for the first year you have the card. To apply, see the online application.

The Starwood Preferred Guest Business Credit Card from American Express offers essentially the same rewards as the consumer card detailed above, but offers a few business-focused perks as well, including the ability to get additional employee credit cards and various record-keeping tools. It is also a little stingier on the upfront bonus — you can earn 25,000 points but only after $5000 in purchases in the first 3 months. You can apply for the Starwood business credit card here.
