Review: Overton’s Credit Card

overtons-credit-cardWatersports & marine retailer Overton’s, in partnership with Comenity Bank, offers a credit card that allows you to earn rewards toward future Overton’s (and Gander Mountain) purchases. Our overview / review of the card is below:

The first thing to note about the Overton’s credit card is that it is a MasterCard, meaning it is widely accepted, unlike many other retail credit cards that are restricted in their use to just a single retail chain. In our view, if you are going to open a new credit line, it is best to open one that can be used widely, and the Overton’s credit card fits the bill.

If you are a regular Overton’s customer, you are likely to appreciate the potential rewards the card offers, including:

  • 3 points per dollar on every Overton’s and Gander Mountain purchase. (Gander Mountain is Overton’s parent company, so you get extra points for purchases at both chains.) You can increase the 3 points to 5 points if you are a heavy user of the card with over $10,000 in purchases.
  • 2 points per dollar on gas and grocery purchases.
  • 1 point per dollar on all other purchases.

Every time you reach 2,000 points, you get a $20 rewards certificate toward a future Overton’s purchase.

You can also earn a one-time bonus of a $60 rewards certificate if you use the card for at least $500 in purchases in the first 3 months of having it — including at least one purchase with the card at a retailer that is NOT Overton’s. (They want to encourage you to use this MasterCard more often, thus the incentive.)

There is no annual fee for the Overton’s credit card, and it offers an interest rate of either 17.24%, 21.24%, or 25.24%, depending on your credit history. While the 17.24% rate isn’t completely terrible, the rates of 20+% are bad — if you EVER carry a balance on your credit cards, you should skip the Overton’s credit card because the rewards will essentially be canceled out by the interest you pay.

On the whole, though, if you are a disciplined credit card user who always pays your bill in full, the Overton’s credit card offers a lot to like. If you’d like to apply online, go here for the card application.
