Review: Marathon Credit Card

marathon-credit-cardMarathon Petroleum offers 4 credit card options — 2 for consumers and 2 for business customers. Below we offer an overview of each and a quick review giving our thoughts on the offer:

  • The Marathon Visa credit card is a consumer credit card issued by Comenity Bank that gives you the flexibility to use it at Marathon locations and anywhere else Visa is accepted. It offers you varying rebates on your Marathon gas purchases based on how much you spend with the card each month (regardless of whether your card purchases are at Marathon or elsewhere.) If you’re a big spender putting $1000 or more on your credit card in a given month, you’ll get a 25-cent-per-gallon rebate on all the Marathon gas you bought that month. If you spend between $500 and $999, it’s a 15-cent-per-gallon rebate. Below that and you’ll still get a 5-cent-per-gallon rebate. In terms of actually getting the rebate, it comes in the form of a $25 Marathon Cash Card every time you accumulate $25 in rebate. A nice card for big card spenders; if you spend less you might want to look at the other gasoline credit card options listed here. Note also that this card offers an interest rate of either 17.99%, 21.99%, or 25.99% — don’t get this card if you have a habit of carrying balances on your credit cards, because the interest will essentially wipe out the rebates you get.

  • If you don’t qualify for the Marathon Visa due to a shaky credit history, you can get the Marathon credit card that is accepted only at Marathon locations. It offers a 2-cent-per-gallon rebate on all purchases, and you get the rebate in $10 increments, which means every 500 gallons of Marathon gas. There’s no reason to get this card if you can qualify for the Visa described above.
  • The Marathon Fleet credit cards for business customers are paid off every month and have nominal monthly fees (see their terms & conditions for exact fees on card setup and monthly reporting services). Your company can earn rebates of up to 7 cents per gallon based on monthly gallons purchased. (Your fleet will have to buy at least 10,000 gallons to get the 7 cent rebate. See the chart here.) The two fleet cards are essentially the same except that the Universal Card can be used at gas stations beyond Marathon and it comes with slightly higher fees for the privilege.
