Review: Holland America Credit Card

holland-america-credit-cardHolland America cruise line, in partnership with Barclays Bank, offers a credit card that allows you to earn points toward cruise rewards, including free cruises. Our overview / review of the card is below:

The Holland America credit card is officially known as the Holland America Line Rewards Visa, and this is important because that name tells you that the card is accepted anywhere Visa is accepted. Here at Credit Card Catalog we prefer these types of cards to credit cards specific to one retail chain or cruise line.

In terms of rewards, here’s what the Holland America Visa offers:

  • 2 points per dollar on Holland America purchases, including purchases made on board a Holland America ship.
  • 1 point per dollar on all other purchases.
  • 5,000 upfront points after you use the card for the first time.
  • No annual fee.

Your points are generally worth a penny each, so, for example, your 5000 bonus points after the first use of the card are worth $50 in onboard purchases.

The Holland America credit card offers 3 tiers of interest rates depending on your credit history — assuming you are approved, you’ll get a 15.74%, 20.74%, or 25.74% rate. The 15.74% rate is fine, but the other two tiers not so much — be sure you don’t carry a balance on this card or you’ll effectively cancel out many or all of the rewards you receive.

Overall, if you’re a frequent Holland America cruiser, this card is OK, but you could just as easily earn better rewards from one of the best cash back credit cards on the market. However, if cruising and Holland America are things you want to identify with via your credit card, you can apply for the card online via this application.
