Supermarket chain Giant Eagle, in partnership with Comenity Bank, offers a credit card that allows you to enhance the rewards you receive as a Giant Eagle Fuelperks member. Our overview / review of the Giant Eagle credit card is below:
The first thing to understand about the Giant Eagle credit card is that it can only be used at Giant Eagle and GetGo, nowhere else. We usually are not fans of credit cards with such limited acceptance, because opening a new credit line can hurt your credit score (especially if you don’t have an excellent credit history). However, we think the Giant Eagle credit card is an exception to this rule.
- If you are a Giant Eagle customer, you are likely to go there often and spend a good amount of money, because groceries are a regular necessity. That makes this card different than most other retail store credit cards that are only used occasionally.
- The Giant Eagle credit card can enhance the rewards you are already earning through the store’s Fuelperks program, instead of being a separate rewards program.
That said, let’s look at what the Giant Eagle credit card offers. But before we do that, a quick primer on the Giant Eagle / GetGo Fuelperks program, in case you are not already a member. The program is simple: you earn Fuelperks rewards based on your spending at Giant Eagle, in the form of discounts on your gas purchases at the Giant Eagle-owned GetGo gas stations. For example, if the regular price of a gallon of gas is $3.00, you might have earned enough Fuelperks to discount that per-gallon cost down to $2.50. You can then fill up your tank at the discounted rate. The more you shop at Giant Eagle, the greater the gas discount.
The Giant Eagle credit card works hand-in-hand with the Fuelperks program, allowing you to earn even larger discounts. Specifically, you get:
- an extra 4¢ off per gallon of fuel for every $50 you spend inside Giant Eagle and GetGo.
- 4¢ off per gallon of fuel for every $100 you spend on fuel at GetGo. (This means for fuel you’ve actually paid for, not for any fuel that you got for free thanks to your Fuelperks. This 4-cents-per-gallon discount applies to a future gas purchase, not for the day you actually buy the gas, if that makes sense.)
We like everything about the Giant Eagle credit card except one important thing: the terrible 25.24% interest rate! If you EVER carry a balance on your credit cards, pass this one by, because you’ll end up paying more in interest than you get in discounts.
However, if you always pay off your balance each month in full, and you are a regular Giant Eagle customer, the Fuelperks credit card could be right for you. You can apply online for the card via this application.
