Women’s casual and athletic clothing retailer Athleta, in partnership with Synchrony Bank, offers a credit card you can use to earn rewards toward future Athleta (or GAP family store) purchases. Is it worth adding to your wallet? Our overview / review of the Athleta credit card is below:
The first thing to understand about the Athleta credit card is that, when you apply, you could be approved for the Athleta Visa, which can be used anywhere Visa is accepted, or the Athleta store card, which is only accepted at Athleta and the other GAP family stores (GAP, Old Navy, Banana Republic). If your credit is not good enough to qualify for the Athleta Visa, you may be approved for the store-only card instead.
Then of course you should ask yourself whether it’s a good idea to open a new credit card with such limited usage. If your credit is shaky, a new credit card will cause a temporary hit to your credit score, so you want to be careful if your credit history isn’t very good.
That said, the Athleta credit card offers a nice rewards program, especially if you are a fan of the other GAP stores in addition to Athleta. It offers you:
- 5 points for every dollar spent with the card at Athleta and other GAP brand stores.
- 1 point per dollar when used elsewhere (this assumes you qualify for the Athleta Visa)
- A one-time 2000-point bonus after you are approved for the card.
For every 500 points you earn, you’ll get a $5 reward coupon you can use toward future Athleta, GAP, Old Navy, or Banana Republic purchases. Note, however, that these rewards have a short shelf life — you usually have about 60 days in which you can redeem them, something that is not made very clear to new cardholders.
While the rewards on the Athleta card are nice, the interest rate on the card is dismal: $28.24%!!! You should only get this card if you always pay your credit cards in full. Otherwise the interest you pay will essentially cancel out the rewards you receive.
You can apply for the Athleta credit card online via this application.
