Macy’s, through its Department Stores National Bank division (partnered with Citibank), offers two different credit cards:
- The standard Macy’s Credit Card can only be used to make purchases at Macy’s stores or online at Macys.com.
- The Macy’s American Express Card can be used at Macy’s or anywhere else American Express is accepted.
You can apply for the standard Macy’s Credit Card online or at a Macy’s store. You can only apply for the Macy’s American Express Card at a Macy’s store location, or by request after you’ve been approved for the standard Macy’s card. In general, the Macy’s store credit card is easier to qualify for than the American Express card.
The big question of this review is: should you get a Macy’s credit card at all?
The answer is: maybe.
If you EVER carry a balance on your credit cards, we would advise you not to get a Macy’s credit card. Last we checked, both Macy’s credit cards had a crazy high 25.49% interest rate. If you carry a balance on either card, you are going to pay A LOT of interest on your purchases, and that’s just not worth it.
However, if you are a good little credit card user who always pays your bill in full and on time, the Macy’s credit cards have some decent rewards. In particular, you get a nice upfront goodie — if you get instant approval on your application, you can use the card today (even before you have the physical card) and get 20% off your Macy’s purchases today and tomorrow.
Otherwise, no freebies with this card, so it is best for the frequent Macy’s shopper who is likely to use the discount offers that are the bulk of the rewards program. The Star Rewards program is a staggered bonus program that offers you greater rewards based on the amount of spending you do at Macy’s with the card. Most of these rewards come in the form of discounts, with more spending equaling more discount offers.
