Review: American Airlines AAdvantage Credit Cards

American Airlines, in partnership with Citi, offers 4 credit cards with varying rewards options in the AAdvantage frequent flyer program. Each has a different fee structure, which will likely play into your decision of which is right for you. An overview / review of each card is below:

  • The AAdvantage Platinum Select Mastercard offers 2 miles per dollar on American Airlines purchases, 2 miles per dollar on gas and restaurant purchases,  and 1 mile per dollar on everything else. It also offers a number of other perks: first checked bag is free on American flights for you and up to 4 others, you get priority boarding privileges, and 25% off in-flight purchases. Plus, new cardholders get 50,000 extra miles if you charge at least $2500 on the card within the first 3 months of having it. The annual fee is $99, but that is waived for the first year.

  • The AAdvantage Executive World Elite MasterCard offers 2 miles per dollar on American Airlines purchases and a mile per dollar on other purchases, but the perks it offers are bigger than the Platinum Select MasterCard. You get the first bag checked free for you and up to 8 people traveling with you, dedicated check-in lines at airport security, access to Admirals Club lounges at airports, 25% off in-flight purchases, and credit for your Global Entry or TSA Pre application fee. New cardholders also can get 75,000 bonus miles if you charge at least $7500 on the card within the first 3 months of having it. Finally, if you charge over $40,000 in a calendar year, you’ll get 10,000 Elite Qualifying Miles toward elite status with American. Annual fee on this card is $450, which may be more than worth it for the frequent traveler.
  • The AAdvantage MileUp Card is a no annual fee card with reduced benefits when compared to the other American Airlines cards. You’ll get 2 miles per dollar on American Airlines purchases, 2 miles per dollar on grocery store purchases, and 1 mile per dollar everywhere else. You get 25% off in-flight purchases on American. You can also earn a bonus 10,000 miles and $50 (as a card statement credit) if you spend at least $500 with the card in the first three months. Otherwise, no other perks like free checked bags or priority boarding, etc.
